In Memory of Gus MacDonald, MTS Founder

Gus MacDonald

A Founder. A Mentor. A True Partner to the Surveying Community.

It is with deep sadness that we share the recent passing of Gus MacDonald, founder of Maine Technical Source (originally Maine Surveyor’s Service), following a long illness.

Gus’ story is the story of MTS.

After serving in the United States Coast Guard, Gus began his career in 1974 apprenticing in the repair of nautical compasses. Even in those early years, he had a clear eye for what others often missed: a growing need in the marketplace for reliable local expertise in surveying equipment—sales, service, and support customers could truly count on.

From a small building in Yarmouth, Maine, Gus built a company rooted in hard work, integrity, and personal relationships. Over time, that vision grew into what Maine Technical Source is today: a trusted partner to surveyors, engineers, and construction professionals with four locations across New England and New York.

While the technology evolved—from early EDMs to today’s drones, scanners, and cutting-edge measurement solutions—Gus’ philosophy never changed. The backbone of MTS would always be service, and the customer would always come first. He believed in doing the job right, showing up when it mattered, and earning trust through consistency, knowledge, and care.

In 2017, Stuart MacDonald purchased MTS from Gus, his father, marking a new chapter for the company while keeping the same values at its core. Gus remained deeply proud of the team and the company’s continued growth.

More than anything, Gus will be remembered for the way he treated people — customers, colleagues, competitors, and friends alike. His legacy is not only a company, but a culture: one built on “shoe-leather” service, honest expertise, and genuine commitment to helping others succeed.

We are grateful for Gus’ life, his work, and the lasting foundation he created. His impact will be felt for generations—within MTS, and across the industries we serve.

Thank you, Gus.
Your legacy will continue in every instrument serviced, every customer supported, and every solution delivered.
