With the ever increasing popularity of Leica's TCRA1100 series robotic instruments, it is quite common to field questions regarding how the ATR (Automatic Target Recognition) aspect of the system works. This is the automated process of the instrument locating and centering on the prism. Being that this is one of the most drastic changes from a conventional total station, it only makes sense that it would cause the most "head scratching".

A recent Leica TPS newsletter helps to better explain the behaviour of their ATR system.
